Phthalates are a group of industrial chemicals used to make plastics, like polyvinyl chloride (PVC), more flexible or resilient. They're also used as solvents. Classified as endocrine disruptors, phthalates are used in hundreds of products, including vinyl flooring, adhesives, detergents, lubricating oils, automotive plastics, plastic clothing (e.g., raincoats), and personal care products, like soap, shampoo, hair spray, and nail polish.
To assist consultants, health experts, and product manufacturers, UL AQS has developed analytical techniques for measuring common phthalates in the air. The technique, following OSHA Method 104, involves collection of indoor air on specialized sorbent tubes followed by GC/MS analysis. Product evaluations are also offered using state-of-the-art controlled environmental chambers.
